The Year in Review

As we head into our 13th season, we can reflect with pride on the accomplishment and success of the past year and look forward with anticipation to a new season.  The number of singers participating in the Chorus is greater than ever.  We had more than 140 voices in the Messiah and spring programs.  Our sold-out spring concert in Sanders Theatre last May was a spectacular triumph for the Chorus.  The Bach Magnificat offered new opportunities to stretch our musicianship individually and collectively.  Without a doubt, two of the high points of the evening were the tango dance exhibition co-sponsored by the Tango Society of Boston and the Chorus' North American premiere of Misa Tango by contemporary Argentinean composer Luis Bacalov.  The fundraising reception with the composer on Friday night not only raised money to help with concert expenses but helped to set the tone for what turned out to be a magical performance later that weekend.

Fall/Spring Music Program Announced

by William Thomas

I wanted to include a few words about plans for our new season. First, however, I would like to thank our President, Paul Raila, the Board of Directors, the Planning Committee and the entire membership, for our past season.  It was a lot of hard work but through your many kind words and thoughtful notes, I know that many of you feel the growth and the experience was meaningful and worthwhile.

The plans for this year, in addition to our annual Messiah, include two extraordinary opportunities.  The tour to Japan this December will be a great opportunity for many in the Chorus to share the experience of performing the Messiah in Tokyo.  How wonderful that we will have the chance to go so far and share this great work with an organization that loves singing and this masterpiece of Handel's as much as we do!  For this year's Spring performance I've chosen Franz Schubert's Mass in G Major, and Henry Purcell's opera, Dido and Aeneas! The Schubert Mass is an absolute jewel.  It is scored for soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists, chorus and string orchestra.  The Dido and Aeneas has the same orchestration, but includes a number of solo roles, most of which I hope to fill from the ranks of the chorus!

Auditions for soloists will be held in the fall and relevant information and material will be distributed at the first rehearsal.  I do ask that singers who wish to audition for a solo role in these productions understand that they will need to be available to rehearse on Tuesday evenings from 6-6:30pm, not every Tuesday but various Tuesdays throughout the fall and spring seasons.  There will be some additional time required for staging rehearsals and run-throughs.  I cannot give a detailed schedule at this time but will prepare one as we begin to rehearse and I develop a better sense of the needs of the production and the talents and needs of the soloists.

An important aspect of the Dido and Aeneas project is that I plan to stage this production (lights, costumes, etc.).  We do not have a firm date for the spring concert, but MIT is willing to co-sponsor production with us!! We hope to have the date settled soon.  At the moment we are hoping for Sunday evening May 18.

We are again very fortunate in having the help of a terrific local artist in our spring concert.  Soprano Jean Danton has agreed to perform the role of Dido.  Ms. Danton has recently appeared as soloist with Keith Lockhart  and the Boston Pops and with Christopher Hogwood and the Handel and Haydn Society.  Her performing the role of Dido with us will be a great treat.

I am so very proud of the work that we did this past year! I am also very excited about the plans for this coming season and look forward to seeing all of you at our first rehearsal on September 10.
Best Wishes - William

Fall Rehearsal Schedule

Music for our fall "preview" season will consist of portions of the program to be performed in May 2003, including parts of Franz Schubert's Mass in G Major, and Henry Purcell's opera, Dido and Aeneas.  Come join us and get a head start on learning the new music. Except where noted, all rehearsals will begin at 6:30pm at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 239 Harvard Street.

New Singers

The Chorus welcomes new singers in most voice parts.  New basses, tenors, and sopranos should simply attend the first rehearsal of the fall cycle on Tuesday, September 10, at 6:30pm.  Due to the abundance of altos presently in the Chorus, new altos interested in singing with us should first contact President Paul Raila at president@cambridgechorus.org or (617) 625-6588.

Attendance Policy

Because the Chorus strives to be accessible to all interested community members it does not require an audition to sing in the Chorus.  As part of this policy all singers are expected to sign-in at each rehearsal and attend all rehearsals in a given production cycle.  If you must miss a rehearsal, please mark the rehearsal sign-in sheet appropriately or notify the Concert Producer, in advance of your absence if possible.  Typically, if you miss more than two rehearsals in a cycle you should speak with the Concert Producer to determine whether you will be permitted to sing in the performance.  New singers who join after the second rehearsal are welcome to sing in rehearsals but may not be able to sing in the performance for that cycle.

Fall Producer Kathy Williams Appeals for Assistance

Kathy Williams has offered to produce the Fall 2002 season and seeks a volunteer to assist her.  If you've ever aspired to be a producer or wondered what a producer does, here's a great opportunity to work with a veteran to learn more about what's involved and gain some practical experience.  Please call her at (617) 876-2877 or email her at kmtw4825@aol.com.

Performance Schedule for 2002/2003

Our mailing list keeps growing and since some of you may not be familiar with our performance schedule, here's a general calendar of concerts and appearances:

In addition, we offer voice classes for our members during the winter and summer.  Not every Chorus member participates in every event, but our season offers something for everyone.

Japan Tour

Preparations for the Japan Tour (Dec. 9-16, 2002) continue apace.  Those signed up to go should stay tuned for more developments as they occur. Many thanks to Larry Philbrick who has been doing a terrific job coordinating reservations, travel arrangements, and money.

Changes to Chorus Officers and Board of Directors

After many years of serving as Clerk of the Chorus, alto Jayne Cantor has "retired" from the position (although she will continue to sing with the Chorus).  I hope that each of you will take the opportunity to express to Jayne your appreciation for her service.  Her clearly worded and organized minutes of Board meetings have helped us communicate and stay on track.  At the June 11th meeting of the Board of Directors, alto Janet Rustow was elected as the new Clerk of the Chorus. Jayne graciously stepped down from the Board to make room for Janet. Her experience and wisdom will not be lost because she will continue to serve as a member of the Planning Committee. Thank you Jayne.  Thanks also to Treasurer Rick Nelson and Vice President Penny Peters for continuing to serve in their respective offices.

Kudos & Thanks for Spring 2002 Concert

All of us owe a special debt of gratitude to three people who worked harder than you can imagine to make possible our magnificent concert this past spring.  Kathy Williams and Karen Greenwood planned and executed hundreds of details, responded to numerous crises, and remained friendly and cheerful in spite of it all.  Music Director William Thomas, worked equally hard to negotiate for us the opportunity to premiere Misa Tango, assemble an orchestra and soloists, make travel arrangements for the composer's visit, study and prepare a new score, and so on (all this in addition to conducting our rehearsals!).  Lastly, thanks to the Chorus members and friends who participated this past season and gave so generously of their time, money, and spirit to make it such an extraordinary experience.  Thanks to you all!

President Appeals for Help

As the Chorus continues to grow, so does our need for more volunteers to help us.  I urge each of you to think about helping with the many tasks needed to keep your Chorus running smoothly.  Truly, to be a member of the Chorus implies more than just attending rehearsals and concerts.

Because of her return to teaching this fall, alto Edith Walker has resigned as Chairperson of the Fundraising Committee.  We now have an urgent need for someone to organize and chair the Fundraising Committee.  Thanks to Edith for her fine work during this past year.

If you're willing to help but aren't sure how, please speak to me.  I'm sure I can find a way to put your talents, interests and enthusiasm to good use on behalf of the Chorus.  My telephone number is (617) 625-6588 and my email address is president@cambridgechorus.org.

Profiles in Chorus

by William Thomas

[If you'd like to write a profile of another Chorus member, please contact Paul Raila.]
It has been my great pleasure to get to know so many talented and distinguished individuals from the Chorus and this community over the past thirteen years. I have always wanted to know more about each of you and have regretted the lack of opportunity to sit and speak with members on a regular basis.  I do hope that we might use the newsletter to share more information about each other and continue to share information about the group.

I have had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Audrey Ince since the very beginning of this chorus.  Many of you know her much better than I do, but she is an individual that through the Chorus and friends I have come to realize that she is a source of strength and support for many causes, institutions and individuals in the greater Cambridge community!

Mrs. Ince--Audrey as she insists that I call her--has served on the board of the Cambridge Community Chorus from the first, and continues in that role today.  She serves as Alto section leader for Messiah, she has helped with fundraising for the Chorus during the Messiah season, and she coordinates our use of Saint Paul Church every fall for our Messiah rehearsals!

Mrs Ince was born and raised in Cambridge.  She attended the Houghton Grammar School and the Cambridge High and Latin School, which is now the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. She has been a member of Saint Paul A.M.E. since childhood.  She tells me that her parents were the first couple married in the church at its current location (1925).

Audrey Ince grew up with music. She sang in the Children's Choir, Rosebuds, at the church and later a group formed for teenagers, Temple Singers.  She is now and has been for many years a member of Saint Paul's Chancel Choir.  Music continues to be an important part of her life.

At Saint Paul, Mrs. Ince serves as Church clerk and as a trustee.  She has served in these roles for over thirty years! She continues to do volunteer service for numerous groups in the church and the community.  She is currently co-chairing the Lifestyle, Stewardship, and Mainevent Committee which has a capital campaign goal of raising several million dollars for the church.

Handel's Messiah has long been a part of Audrey's life.  The Combined Choirs of St. Paul have been performing this great work since the early 60's.  The performances there have brought many from that community into active membership in the Cambridge Community Chorus and participation in our annual performance. Many who were involved with those performances as soloists (Bob Honeysucker and Vincent Stringer) continue to perform as soloist with us.  What an extraordinary and rich tradition from Saint Paul that helped us shape and build our current ensemble and organization!  It is more than fitting that we should have Mrs. Ince as one of our Messiah angels.  Her devotion, organizational skills, talent, and dedication are legendary and provide a service that is invaluable.

Not wanting to promote Audrey to sainthood too soon, I am mindful of her delicious and sometimes "devilish" sense of humor! This wonderful sense of fun combines magnificently with a sense of "come on and let's get this job done".  She knows very much how to do that--"get the job done."  This is a good, strong fine, individual whom I feel very fortunate to know and from whom the chorus benefits greatly.  Bravo and thank you Audrey!
